Literary Criticisms

Posted on: September 16, 2009

I hope you all are having a wonderful Wednesday. Mine, while not fantastic so far, does at least promise to be hectic, busy, and just generally crazy.

It’s also three days until my fiancee and future father-in-law arrive to visit me.

I’m excited.

But, it’s time to think about our series. Today’s, I have to tell you, deals with literary criticism. Personally, I understand the value – it helps you to know more about form, style, and the like. But, I hate reading it. I don’t think the actual value is as great as the perceived value. Because really, it’s all subjective anyways. Even things about form – yes, I know they are things that can be more “measured” but at the same time, that doesn’t mean that they were done intentionally. People, I sometimes feel like, are always making excuses for bad work, saying that it was intentional, when really, how can we know that? We can’t.

So that’s my deal with literary criticism.
